Halo World Championship Tour: Columbus is a one-time qualifier to determine the eight teams, from the North American region (consisting of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico), that qualify for Halo World Championship 2016. The event takes place at the MLG.tv Arena in Columbus, Ohio from February 19-21, 2016. Halo 5 is played in 4v4 competition.

Overview

Synopsis

HWC Columbus was the culmination of two months of intense online competition between North America's finest. It signified the return of Halo to Major League Gaming, if only briefly, for the first time since 2012. Sixteen teams were invited to the event - fifteen through a series of five online qualifiers combined with a ladder, and one through a last chance qualifier. Prior to the fifth qualifier, a bombshell occurred, with Lethul leaving the heavily favored Evil Geniuses to join Counter Logic Gaming, replacing OGRE2. This resulted in a domino effect on the remaining teams, with some rosters not being solidified until minutes before the lock. With the teams set in stone nearly a month before the event began, players had plenty of time to put practice in, and in some cases, build chemistry with players they had never teamed with before.

The event's group stage featured predictable finishes, upsets and heartbreak. In Group A, Team Allegiance and Triggers Pound advanced, ousting 8th seeded Dream Team and fan favorites OpTic Gaming in the process. In Group B, Counter Logic Gaming easily advanced, leaving the second advancing team to be decided in a match between Noble eSports and eLevate. Though this match had been anticipated for weeks as one to watch out for, it ended up being a 3-0 rout for Noble. Group C went into the event as the fan-touted "pool of death", and it lived up to the name, featuring possibly the biggest upset of the event, as young gun squad Denial eSports, featuring a transitioning Call of Duty pro and three players who had never seen a major grand finals, took out Team EnVyUs, featuring two of the most prolific Halo players of all time in OGRE2 and iGotUrPistola, in four games. This eliminated EnVyUs from contention for making it out of the pool, meaning that HWC 2016 would not see two of Halo's biggest legends competing. Group D featured the highly anticipated rematch between Team Liquid and Renegades. Last time the teams had met, at X Games Aspen 2016, Renegades won the match in a rout, with Ninja defeating the team that dropped him. In Columbus, Team Liquid got their revenge, 3-0ing Renegades and taking 1st place in the pool. Renegades still advanced as the runner-up.

With the bracket set and the HWC qualifiers determined, it was now time to determine the distribution of the event's $50,000 prize pool. The top three seeds made short work of their opponents, but fourth seeded Team Liquid were upset in five games by the same Denial squad that had eliminated EnVyUs. Denial then went on to accomplish the unthinkable, defeating the #1 seeded Team Allegiance in Game 7 of the best-of-7 series to make the finals, the first major event finals for every member of Denial. On the other side of the bracket, possibly the most anticipated match-up of the event occurred between rivals Evil Geniuses and Counter Logic Gaming. EG had the most recent victory over CLG, having 4-3'd them at X Games. Here, CLG steamrolled EG, sweeping them out of the tournament and making a statement going into HWC. This was EG's first tournament loss since UGC St. Louis 2015. Denial looked to pull off another huge upset in the finals, but could only take two games off the dominant CLG squad.
