MLG Anaheim 2009 was the fourth event of the 2009 MLG season, taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California from November 6-8, 2009. Halo 3 was played in a 4v4 tournament alongside Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Gears of War 2, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and World of Warcraft.
Another event, another period of roster changes, Triggers Down and Str8 Rippin had won every event since MLG Orlando 2008, so they had no intentions of changing anything up. Same went for Carbon, whose new lineup had given Carbon its strongest placing since Halo 2. Following their 4th place finish in Dallas, Instinct changed things up by replacing GH057ayame with FearItSelf, formerly of Final Boss. Final Boss picked up Soviet from Believe the Hype in FIS's place, while GH057ayame found his way to Classic, replacing Legend. Legend went to Status Quo, replacing the departed Clutch, who filled Soviet's spot on BtH. The newest team to the top 8 picture - Dynasty - made major revisions, replacing Max/Pro and Assault with APG and TiZoXiC.
MLG Anaheim used a three bracket system. The Championship Bracket was a 16-team bracket seeded randomly, with the top 4 seeds placed in their own quadrants, with 1 and 4 being on one half of the bracket, and 2 and 3 being on the other half. Losing in rounds 1 and 2 sent a team to the Placement Bracket, where they would play to determine where in the Losers' Bracket they would emerge. Losing in rounds 3 and 4 of the Championship Bracket allowed teams to skip the Placement Bracket and immediately placed them in Losers rounds 8 and 10, respectively. The first round of the Placement Bracket pit the losers of CBR1 against eachother. The winners then played the losers of CBR2 (PBR2), while the losers played the top 4 teams coming out of the Open Bracket (PBR3). The winners and losers of PBR2 emerged in LBR6 and LBR5, respectively, while the winners and losers of PBR3 emerged in LBR4 and LBR3. The remainder of the bracket played out like a standard MLG Losers Bracket.
