MLG Dallas 2008 was the fifth event of the 2008 MLG season, taking place at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas from October 3-5, 2008. Halo 3 was played in 4v4 and amateur FFA tournaments, alongside Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Gears of War and World of Warcraft.

Overview

The regular season was over and done with, and seven teams had earned entry into the National Championships. Every other team had only one chance to qualify, the Open Playoff Bracket in Dallas. The already invited top 7 teams were playing for prize money, seeding position, and pride. Some teams, like Str8 Rippin, Instinct, Final Boss and Ambush, elected to move into the final events of the season with their Toronto rosters. Others did not. A swirl of team changes began with Mackeo leaving Triggers Down days after the event. Two weeks later, Classic released Legend and picked up Mackeo. The biggest change happened when Karma left his longtime team Carbon to fill the empty spot on Triggers Down. This left the door open for Naded to leave Legendz and take the spot on Carbon. For the lower seeded teams, there was only one more shot at qualifying, and everyone was trying to build the best possible roster to do so. While 1st seeded amateur team Antigravity stuck together, most of the other high ranked amateur squad shook things up. Replacing Naded on Legendz was the aptly named Legend. Several brand new teams formed, and other established ones made small to large changes. While it wasn't as big a frenzy as the pre-Toronto changes, it was still destined to shake the results up.

Unlike the Playoff format in past seasons, there were now only two brackets as opposed to three. In the Open Bracket, every team outside of the top 7 played for the single remaining spot in the Championship Bracket, and the National Championship, with the top 8 teams receiving byes to the 6th round. The favorites for the Open Bracket included Legendz and their new team member Legend, Breaking Point, a team that had consistently performed strongly over the season and pulled off many upsets, Antigravity, formerly known as Fatal Images, and Impulse, composed of players who had played on teams such as Chilled Reality and Breaking Point over the course of the season. Antigravity made it to the finals with no trouble, dropping only one game in the process. Legendz were upset in their first match by Florida Jackalopes, but made it to the finals after overtaking FJ in their LB rematch. Breaking Point and Impulse had tougher nights. Breaking Point was taken out by Antigravity and eliminated in LB by Legendz in a close 5 game series, while Impulse was knocked out of Winners' by Under the Influence and eliminated by Legendz. In the finals, Legendz defeated Antigravity with a staggering 6-1 final score to earn a spot in the Championship Bracket, and more importantly, the National Championships.

Legendz did not have as easy of a time in the Championship Bracket. In their first match, they were given a cold 3-0 welcome by the top-seeded Str8 Rippin. The new Carbon had a strong start, nearly overtaking Final Boss in a hard-fought five game loss. The new Triggers Down made a strong first impression, taking out Ambush 3-1. In what some might call the biggest upset of the event, Instinct were defeated 3-2 in a very close series by Classic, with Mackeo and Victory X taking revenge on their former teammates Roy and Lunchbox. In Winners' Round 2, Str8 Rippin took out Classic in four games and advanced to the Winners' Finals. On the other side of the bracket, Final Boss put on a show, defeating Triggers Down in a close 3-2 series and advancing to the Winners' Finals for the first time in Halo 3.

In the Losers' Bracket, Instinct ended Legendz tournament with a 3-1 defeat, sending them home with a top 8 finish. Despite looking strong against Final Boss, Carbon had nothing for Ambush, and were swept out of the tournament in 3 games by the upstart squad. Instinct then had the unfortunate circumstance of having to face Triggers Down in WB Round 2. They made a series out of it, but could not defeat the powerhouse squad, losing in 5 games. Ambush continued to impress and upset, taking out Classic in 5 games. Unfortunately for Ambush, their next opponent was a team with a 3-1 advantage over them - Triggers Down. TD continued where they left off, taking an overall 6-2 victory over Ambush. In the Winners' Finals, Str8 Rippin gave Final Boss a harsh welcome back to the big leagues, sweeping them 3-0 and looking primed to repeat as champions. Unfortunately for Str8, Triggers Down was not ready to bow out just yet. Despite the 3-2 deficit, they took 4 straight games from Final Boss, taking the overall series 6-3 and advancing to the finals, looking to prove that they could win without Snipedown. They did just that. In an enthralling 10 game series, Triggers Down took a 6-4 victory and were crowned the Dallas Champions, going into the National Championships as the team to beat.
