MLG Dallas 2009 was the third event of the 2009 MLG season, taking place at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas from August 28-30, 2009. Halo 3 was played in a 4v4 tournament alongside Gears of War 2 and World of Warcraft.

Overview

Str8 Rippin were back on top, continuing their pattern of winning every second Halo 3 event, and Columbus appeared to solidify that, despite an off showing in the Meadowlands, the National Champions were still the team to beat. With equally high expectations as the top two teams, but lacking an event win, something had to give for Instinct. As a result, they made the decision to drop fan favorite Walshy in favor of GH057ayame, leaving Carbon after a three year tenure with the team and leaving ShockWav3 as the only remaining member from the 2006 National Championship roster. Walshy replaced GH057ayame on Carbon. Carbon's moves didn't stop there. They also dropped Cpt Anarchy and picked up Naded, who was fresh off a top 40 finish with his "Golden Ticket" project. Final Boss, still looking to return to the top 2 for the first time since Meadowlands '08, made a roster change as well, replacing Mackeo with the returning StrongSide, who had left Status Quo after back to back top 8 finishes. Mackeo went to the struggling Ambush, replacing Gun Shot. Believe the Hype released Clutch with the intention of bringing back Sypher, but Sypher was unable to attend the tournament, so BtH was forced to recruit Maniac, a player with limited success in the top 8. Clutch went on to fill the gap left by StrongSide on Status Quo.

The first round of Winners' went as expected, with no upsets occurring. Things got interesting in Round 2. Str8 took a close series 3-2 over BtH, while Instinct narrowly advanced over Classic. Triggers Down made short work of Status Quo. In the biggest upset thus far, Carbon took out Final Boss in four games, already guaranteeing a higher placing than the previous event's lineup. The Carbon hype train didn't stop there, as they shockingly swept Str8 out in Round 3. Triggers Down took out Instinct in 4 games, setting up a WB Finals match against Carbon.

The biggest story in the early rounds of Losers' action was undoubtedly Under The Influence. Consisting of four players who had all been on different teams in Columbus, UtI came into the event with holstered expectations. Starting in Round 1, UtI fought through 6 teams, including high seeds Heaven and Earth and Believe the Hype, before finally being stopped by Final Boss in Round 7. Upset in Round 6 was Status Quo, eliminated by Dynasty in 4 games. Dynasty then met Classic in Round 7, where they lost an extended series which went all the way to game 10. It was the first top 8 finish for everyone on the team. Coming off their victory over Under the Influence, Final Boss looked to defeat Instinct in Round 8 and get another shot at Carbon. Unfortunately for FB, Instinct narrowly took the series 3-2. Str8 made short work of Classic, but before they were able to get another shot at Carbon, they were defeated by Instinct 3-1, continuing the win/loss pattern for Str8.

In the Winners' Finals, Carbon made a series out of it, but were unable to defeat the juggernaut Triggers Down squad, losing in 5 games. In the Losers' Finals, Carbon rolled over Instinct, continuing the "Walshy curse", which suggests that a team dropping Walshy will always be outplaced by Walshy's new team. Despite their newfound confidence going into the Finals, Carbon could not overtake Triggers Down, eventually losing in 10 games.

iGotUrPistola of Triggers Down was named the MVP of the event, while Demon D of Believe the Hype was named the Old Spice Rising Star nominee of the event.

Format

MLG Columbus used a three bracket system. The Championship Bracket was a 16-team bracket seeded randomly, with the top 4 seeds placed in their own quadrants, with 1 and 4 being on one half of the bracket, and 2 and 3 being on the other half. Losing in rounds 1 and 2 sent a team to the Placement Bracket, where they would play to determine where in the Losers' Bracket they would emerge. Losing in rounds 3 and 4 of the Championship Bracket allowed teams to skip the Placement Bracket and immediately placed them in Losers rounds 8 and 10, respectively. The first round of the Placement Bracket pit the losers of CBR1 against eachother. The winners then played the losers of CBR2 (PBR2), while the losers played the top 4 teams coming out of the Open Bracket (PBR3). The winners and losers of PBR2 emerged in LBR6 and LBR5, respectively, while the winners and losers of PBR3 emerged in LBR4 and LBR3. The remainder of the bracket played out like a standard MLG Losers Bracket.

  • Open Bracket
    • Teams seeded below 16 placed in bracket
    • Top 16 teams advance to various positions in CB, depending on where they finished
    • Double-elimination, best of 3 series
      • Extended Series rule: best of 5 series starting 2-0, or 2-1 based on result of previous meeting
  • Championship Bracket
    • Top 16 teams randomly placed in bracket, with top 4 seeds in separate quadrants
    • Non-elimination Placement Bracket matches occur for certain LB placements
    • Double-elimination, best of 5 series
