MLG Meadowlands 2009 was the first event of the 2009 MLG season, taking place at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, New Jersey from April 3-5, 2009. Halo 3 was played in a professional 4v4 tournament and amateur FFA tournament, alongside Gears of War 2.

Overview

The first season of Halo 3 was over and Str8 Rippin were the undisputed kings of the season, with three event wins including the National Championship. Close behind them were Triggers Down, with two event wins, defeating Str8 Rippin in the finals in each instance. Final Boss started the season off strongly, winning the first event, but fell off as the season progressed, eventually making the decision to drop Walshy in favor of Neighbor. Despite not winning an event, Instinct could be argued to have been the 3rd best team of the season, with consistently strong placings and multiple finals appearances, culminating in a 2nd place finish at the National Championships.

As a result of Str8 Rippin's dominance, a flurry of team changes occurred during the offseason, with Str8 as the only roster to remain intact. 2nd seeded Instinct dropped Soviet, picking up Neighbor from Final Boss. Notoriously unfond of losing, OGRE2 completely retooled the Final Boss roster, making the historic decision to drop his brother OGRE1 from the team, as well as StrongSide. To rebuild the roster, OGRE2 recruited three pro circuit veterans - FearItSelf from Triggers Down, and the duo of Mackeo and Victory X from Classic. SK and Hysteria of Triggers Down went the opposite route, replacing the veteran Karma and FearItSelf with two players who had never placed higher than fourth - iGotUrPistola and Heinz from Ambush. Soldier187 and AnT of Classic reunited with Legend of Legendz and FeaR, who had sat out the second half of 2008, reforming the original Classic lineup. Carbon made only one team change, replacing Naded with Soviet. On Ambush, only NeXuS remained, as Triggers Down had acquired half the roster and Cloud left for Believe the Hype. To rebuild the roster, NeXuS recruited TiZoXiC and Gun Shot of Antigravity, and Chig of Breaking Point. Taking the 8th seed was a newly formed team, VG The New Order, featuring Defy and Best Man of Legendz alongside Naded and Karma. Several high profile players joined lower seeded teams. StrongSide and Ace joined Status Quo alongside FlamesworD and Totz. Cloud reformed Believe The Hype, recruiting Demon D, Clutch and Sypher, three players yet to achieve top 8 placings in MLG. OGRE1 formed The Incredibles with ManTrain, Mioff and the veteran Tupac. A new team - Heaven and Earth, featured a returning HokuM alongside Poweezy, KillerDrew and Perplexity.

The new season kicked off with a revised format, featuring semi-random bracket placement. One of the most anticipated match-ups occurred in the opening round, as OGRE2 and Final Boss took on OGRE1 and The Incredibles, the twin brothers competing against eachother for the first time. Final Boss took the series in a 3-0 rout. 5th seeded Classic met up with 11th seeded Believe the Hype in the opening round, and were unexpectedly taken out 3-1 by the unproven team. In another anticipated matchup, StrongSide's new team Status Quo met up with the veteran squad VG The New Order. SQ took a close 5 game victory. In the following round, Str8 Rippin were tested early as Carbon took two games off the National Champions. OGRE2 showed no mercy on former teammate StrongSide and Status Quo, as he and Final Boss dismantled SQ in dominating fashion, knocking them out with a 3-0 series score. Instinct took a 3-1 victory over Ambush. Not satisfied with their upset over Classic, Believe the Hype continued to turn heads, this time upsetting Triggers Down 3-1. Still not done, BtH did the unthinkable in the following round, taking out National Champions Str8 Rippin in 5 games and securing a guaranteed top 3 finish. On the other side of the bracket, Instinct took out Final Boss 3-1 to set up a meeting with the Cinderella squad.

Despite being eliminated early by Triggers Down, 15th seeded Heaven and Earth were not done yet. They upset Classic in the Placement Bracket, earning a higher berth in Losers. After a close loss to Status Quo, their LB starting point was set at Round 5. From there, they fought through Uprising and Ambush before meeting Status Quo once again. This time, they turned the tables on SQ, overtaking them 6-4 despite the 3-2 deficit, earning at least top 6. Unfortunately, their next opponent was Str8 Rippin. Str8 took out HaE 3-1, ending their Cinderella run. On the opposite side, VG The New Order looked to make a similar run, but despite taking out Classic and ending their night, they were defeated by Carbon in the next round for a top 8 finish. Fresh off their loss to BtH, Triggers Down entered LB with something to prove. They made short work of High Society and Carbon, defeating both 3-0. They then met Final Boss in the following round, and took a very close series, winning game 5 by only two kills and securing top 4. In the following round, TD continued their tear, taking out Str8 Rippin 3-1 and officially ending the National Champions' hopes of a repeat event win, handing the dominant roster its lowest ever placing.

In the WB Finals, Instinct did what no one else had been able to do so far, avoid being upset by Believe the Hype. They took out the underdog squad 3-1, sending them to the Losers' Finals for a rematch with Triggers Down. Despite the 3-1 deficit, Triggers Down pulled off a huge comeback, winning 5 of 6 games en route to a 6-4 overall victory. They had fought through 5 rounds of Losers and were now in the Grand Finals after exacting revenge on the team that knocked them out. In order to win the event, they had to defeat Instinct twice. They made a statement in the first series, sweeping Instinct 3-0 and setting up a second series. Instinct managed to make a huge comeback in a game, but it was the only game they would win, as they eventually lost 3-1 and Triggers Down won its third event, with Heinz and iGotUrPistola winning their first.

While Triggers Down were the winners, the story of the event was arguably the rise of Believe the Hype, consisting of Cloud and three players with no history in the top 8. Another team to make a name for itself at this event was Heaven and Earth, consisting of the returning Hokum alongside KillerDrew, Poweezy and Perplexity. KillerDrew earned the Meadowlands nomination for the 2009 Old Spice Rising Star award for his efforts in helping his team achieve a top 6 finish. Captained by the veteran StrongSide, Status Quo members Ace, Flamesword and Totz achieved their first top 8 placing, having spent most of the 2008 season on the cusp. Emerging from the Open Bracket all the way to a 12th place finish was High Society, a team of four relatively unknown players with not much top 16 experience between them. Only time would tell if these breakout performances would translate to more in the future.

Format

MLG Meadowlands used a three bracket system. The Championship Bracket was a 16-team bracket seeded randomly, with the top 4 seeds placed in their own quadrants, with 1 and 4 being on one half of the bracket, and 2 and 3 being on the other half. Losing in rounds 1 and 2 sent a team to the Placement Bracket, where they would play to determine where in the Losers' Bracket they would emerge. Losing in rounds 3 and 4 of the Championship Bracket allowed teams to skip the Placement Bracket and immediately placed them in Losers rounds 8 and 10, respectively. The first round of the Placement Bracket pit the losers of CBR1 against eachother. The winners then played the losers of CBR2 (PBR2), while the losers played the top 4 teams coming out of the Open Bracket (PBR3). The winners and losers of PBR2 emerged in LBR6 and LBR5, respectively, while the winners and losers of PBR3 emerged in LBR4 and LBR3. The remainder of the bracket played out like a standard MLG Losers Bracket.
